Huckerby "Whites have signed a class act in Drury"

Leeds United old boy Darren Huckerby is confident age will prove no barrier for new signing Adam Drury at Elland Road.

Huckerby played alongside Drury, pictured left, during Norwich City’s promotion to the Premiership in 2003-04, when the left-back captained the Canaries to the old first division title.

Drury was also part of City’s 2010-11 side who returned to the top-flight, and he gave the Norfolk club more than 10 years of unstinting service before agreeing to join Leeds on a two-year deal last week.

The popular defender, 33, made just 16 starts for Norwich last term but his decision to head north when he becomes a free agent next month was still considered a surprise to Canaries fans, with the player turning down a new one-year deal at Carrow Road, albeit on reduced terms.

And while Drury may turn 34 at the end of August, Huckerby insists the unflappable full-back remains as good as ever.

Huckerby, based in Norfolk, told the YEP: “Adam’s obviously coming towards the end of his career but he’s still an exceptional defender. If you want someone who is going to be a class act when it comes to defending week in, week out, then I think Leeds have got a great signing.

“He played 16 games in the Premiership last year and that shows his quality.

“He doesn’t say what he’s going to do, but just gets on and does it. He’s one of the best one-on-one defenders I’ve ever played with.

“That’s what you are getting from Adam. Leeds fans should be very pleased they’ve signed him.

“Adam was a popular figure in the changing rooms at Norwich and won three promotions at the club and Leeds certainly need players like that, while in the last few years, defending hasn’t been one of their strong suits. He’s a really good signing.

“He’s a solid defender who will put his head in where it hurts and the other lads at the back will appreciate his experience.

“Neil Warnock is no mug and knows what he’s doing in terms of getting promotions. He’s done it many times before and knows what type of player to bring to achieve that and Adam is one of those.

“He’s seen it and done it and Neil will know what he’s getting.”

United target Paddy Kenny is still awaiting on developments at Elland Road, with the club waiting for the cash to push through his signing from QPR for a fee in the region of £500,000.

The 34-year-old is intent on finding a club before the start of pre-season early next month, with Leeds his favoured destination, but several other clubs, including Ipswich Town and Bristol City, are waiting in the wings if his move falls through.
