Ken Bates loves the sound of his own voice and perhaps more importantly the bile that comes out of it. In fact he loves it so much that he collects people around him at Elland Road a bit like a museum curator collects artefacts. Bates loves people who will repeat the veracity according to Ken Bates. Ladies and gentlemen I give you Messrs Grayson and Lorimer and now it seems even Mr Gray is starting to repeat the Ken Bates lie.
Now Lorimer and Gray I can fully understand, they both work for Bates, Lorimer sitting on the Board of Leeds United, the fans champion if you like. Both offer expert opinion on the woes of Leeds United on the field on match days alongside the likes of Thom Kirwin on Bates, sorry Yorkshire Radio.
Larry I cannot understand. Larry is a good Manager, or at least has the potential to be a very good manager. Larry knew the score, he knew that Bates would not give him sufficient financial backing to build a team that can push for promotion back to the Premier League. Larry could and should stand up to Ken Bates, Larry could have walked in the Summer, I am sure there would have been one or two clubs prepared to take a gamble on him, but he is a Leeds fan, and he believes he can take Leeds United forward. Larry should have used his position to force Bates hand and invest a little, but he didn’t. Now all we get are the occasional soundbite from Larry. about how we are not a selling club, how we do not have a player crises, and how he is happy with the squad he has, so much so in fact that we can sell one of our better players for less than his market value.
No, Ken Bates prefers to do it things on the cheap, with loanees and cast offs from the Premier League. Oh and yes you can get some good players who are prepared to drop a division to join a club with a forward looking vision, albeit a football vision, not one of hotels and museums for some strange reason, just how moronic is that ?
No, for Leeds United we don’t sign those better players, not the ones that those clubs prepared to spend a little on transfer fees or salaries will sign. No Larry and Ken target the leftovers, the sloppy seconds if you like of the football fraternity. Or those at the end of their careers looking for a last minute pension boost. That said, credit where it is due, we did draw the line at extending the football career of Robbie Savage.
There is a part of me that genuinely believes that Ken Bates does not want Leeds United Football Club back in the Premier League for a few years yet, not until such times as he would no longer be liable to pay the creditors he screwed over in 2007.
Anyhow I digress, when it comes to repeating his fantasy land variation of reality at Elland Road, there is no one better than the man himself, and his weekly “interview” on his own radio station Yorkshire Radio, with yet another of his employees Ben Fry. Of course I use the word interview incorrectly, because that would suggest the interviewee Mr Bates is grilled and challenged by the interviewer Mr Fry. Nothing could be further form the truth, and you do start to wonder if Fry could stick his tongue any further up Ken Bates rectum.
I do like listening to and reading the thoughts of Chairman Ken. Yes he talks bile, and yes it’s usually between 5 and 10 minutes or so of ill concealed lies, but that does not make it any the less entertaining. The fact that he does not take questions from fan’s guile’s us all, but the dissent of the morons is starting to show on the old crook. If not why go to the trouble of having the Fry and Bates exchange on of how grilling an interviewer Mr Fry is?
BF: There has been some criticism as well of Yorkshire Radio, that we haven’t been asking you the right questions and we haven’t been putting the fans’ points across. We feel like we’ve dealt with all the big issues, and tried to ask you everything people want to know.
KB: Well yeah, I mean, I think you have to be fair. I never know what you said off air. Which isn’t always nice and pleasant between us, but I mean we’re both big boys we can stand up for that. No I think you try to present, obviously try to present, the club’s story, but there are valid questions to be asked and you asked them. You can’t ask me questions like “where’s all the money gone then innit” (cockney voice), like one idiot who was asked why he was chanting “Bates Out”, he said “cos we’re in the red” (cockney voice) and this guy by the way is a political student – so God help the country in 20 years time when he gets his inevitable seat in the Houses of Commons because we’re one of the few clubs in the country who aren’t in the red
I love it Ken, it is the only thing about your tenure at Elland Road that I enjoy.
That said, don’t let that stop you selling up and enjoying the last few years of your life not making our lives an utter misery. We want our football club back.
